Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a great comfort food, and pretty easy to make. All it takes is some meat, veggies, and mashed potatoes.

In other parts of the world, Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb, while Cottage Pie is made with beef. However, here in the US, we use beef for everything and this recipe is no exception.

Ingredients

  • 1-2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 can mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, and corn are good)
  • 1 medium onion
  • Chopped garlic (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • Butter for sautéing
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Evan’s Famous (and easy) Mashed Potatoes
    • 3 large potatoes will do the trick for this recipe

Steps

  1. Peel, cut, and start boiling the potatoes to mash. Follow the instructions here to make a very flavorful bowl of mashed potatoes.
  2. In a frying pan, add the butter, onion, and garlic, and sauté them for a few minutes. Then add the ground beef and cook until done.
  3. While the beef cooks, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  4. When the beef is done, add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and canned veggies to the pan. Stir and simmer to mix the flavors.
  5. When the potatoes are done, mash them according to the recipe
  6. Pour the beef mixture into a baking pan and spread it out evenly.
  7. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the beef mixture, to evenly cover it. You can make swirls and lines in the top of the potatoes for a nice look and increased browning.
  8. Place the baking pan in the oven, and bake for 30 minutes.

The resulting dish will be delicious and relatively healthy (especially if you used lean meat and not that much salt).
